Various Types of Insulating Materials
Insulating materials are mainly used to stop the flow of heat, sound or
electrical charges from any substance. In the case of electronic insulators, the
substance that insulation materials are made of contains no movable electrical
charges, so when voltage is applied across the insulating material, there is no
flow of electric current. There are many types of insulation materials, some of
which are listed below.
* Acrylic and Ceramic
Both of these materials are widely used in insulation, particularly if toughness
and transparency are needed. For insulation purposes, solvent cement can be
pretty useful, while ceramics are highly useful in making insulators, components
and circuit boards due to their good electrical and thermal insulating
properties.
* Glass
Glass as an insulation material is available in a wide variety of forms, like
solid glass, fiber tapes, fiberglass sheets and mats. Glass can also be obtained
in woven tubing, cloth and various composites.
* Mica
Mica is an insulation material that is useful for heat-sinking transistors or
other components with electrical conductors. Since thermal conductivity is high
in electrical insulation, mica sheets are often used for this purpose. Mica is
also used to prevent flakes in composite tapes and sheets.
* Nylon
Nylon is an insulation material used in a variety of other materials mainly to
improve weathering and stiffness. Nylon has also good resistance to high
voltages, and is impact resistant as well, making it ideal for robust use.
* Polyester
Known for its extreme toughness, polyester is mostly used in film sheets and
tapes for graphic arts and electronics. Polyester is also used in car capacitor
insulation.
* PVC
Polyvinyl chloride or PVC is mostly used in house wiring, being one of the most
common insulating materials. For tapes and tubing, irradiated PVC is used
because of its heat resistant properties.
* Tapes
Various insulating materials are available in tape form, with vinyl tape being
the most widely used for wiring insulation. Not only are tapes handy and
convenient to use, they also contain adhesive properties that can stick to most
materials.
* Foams
Foam is also considered a good insulator, as it can be used for thermal,
electrical, sound and mechanical insulation purposes.
Other materials not listed here that make good insulators include silicon,
laminates, rubber and many more.
