Different Types of Insulation Products
The main purpose of insulation products is to provide a thermal barrier on the
surface of the walls, protecting them from heat radiation after the insulation
has been installed. These materials should perfectly conform to the prescribed
R-value, which is an industry standard unit of measuring a material's insular
properties as well as its resistance to heat flow and transfer.
Key Specifications for Building Insulation
1. Length - The longest side of the unit, measured in feet.
2. Width - The shortest side of the unit, measured in feet.
3. Thickness - The area between the top face and the bottom face, measured in
inches.
4, Facing - The material bonded to the top surface of the unit, which can be
foil, Kraft paper, or others.
5. R-value - The industry standard unit of measuring the insular properties of
materials.
Commonly Used Insulation Products
1. Pipe and equipment insulation
2. High temperature pipe insulation
3. Calcium silicate insulation
4. Block insulation
5. Fiberglass board insulation
6. Semi-rigid fibre glass insulation
7. Metal building insulation
8. Vapor retarding metal building insulation
9. PVC insulating fittings
10. Insulation adhesive and coatings
11. Cladding products
12. Fire protection products
13. Refractory products
14. Accessory products
Glass wool batts - Fire resistant and not harmful to health, as proven by
extensive research. Glass wool batts also have guaranteed R-values.
Rock wool batts - Considered to be a premium insulation product, as
transport costs alone can be rather expensive. This type of home insulation
product also can't be compressed.
Sheep wool batts - All the natural sheep oils need to be completely
cleaned off first to use this type of insulation. Sheep wool batts also have
limitations in terms of available sizes and R-values.
Polyester batts - Limited in terms of size availability and range of
R-values. The nature of the fibers themselves makes it difficult for polyester
batts and blankets to achieve proper R-values.
Polystyrene - This type of insulation is often used in suspended ceiling
systems, raked ceilings and sheds.
Cellulose fiber loose fill - Mostly comprised of recycled newspapers,
cellulose insulation also has fire retardant chemicals.
Cosywrap - A type of insulation that consists of a special water replant
grade made from granulated rock wool. Cosywrap is used for insulation of cavity
walls and double brick walls.
